TARGET GROUP:

 

Navigation OOW candidate – completion of S1/S2 at CPUT or DUT

 

Please Note: The aim of this course is to assess the candidate’s

knowledge of Morse Code and Flags, not to teach the subject

matter. Prior knowledge of both Morse Code and Flags is

imperative.

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum 3 months sea time.
Adequate knowledge of the English language.
Computer skills.
Thorough knowledge of Morse Code and Phonetic Flags – this preparation will be conducted on board prior to attending this course.

 

EXIT LEVEL:

 

Knowledge and skills required for the Communication Certificate.

 

ASSESSMENT:

 

Written and practical as required by SAMSA Code.

 

CERTIFICATE:

 

SAMSA accredited certificate, issued by SAMTRA for candidates who demonstrated competence as required by the Code.

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

 

To communicate by transmitting and receiving

Information by visual signalling, using flags and Morse code.

 

To be familiar with IMO Standard Marine Communications Phrases.

 

To be able to use receivers in the Maritime Mobile &
Maritime Mobile Satellite Service and to understand
Maritime Safety Information.

 

To be able to generate a navigational warning in accordance with requirements of SOLAS.
