Admission Level:
As set out by SAQA under “Learning Assumptions” for the above course, Level 3.
Objective:
To train seafarers towards their National Certificate in Maritime Operations – Oiler, through eextensive simulator training and lectures used to cover the course contents set out by the SAMSA code and SAQA unit standards.

Course Contents:
- Module One: Rope Work & Rigging
Types of rope; Rope care; Safety precautions; Knots and their usage; Splices and their usage; Rigging and stowing of the gangway; Preparation for loading & discharging of cargo/stores; Stowing and securing of stores and cargo.
- Module Two: Tool Care & Safety
Types of tools; Checking tools for defects; Tool maintenance; Tool care; Tool safety.
- Module Three: Hull Care
Preparation and risk assessments; Cleanliness of plant and work areas; Corrosion control and painting.
- Module Four: Legislation and Policies
Occupational Health and Safety; MARPOL; SOLAS; SAMSA; IMO; STCW; USCG; Immigration; Port Authority; Local Law Enforcement.
- Module Five: Bunkering and Oil Transferring
Bunkering Theory; Bunkering Operations.
- Module Six: Plant Familiarisation
Identification of Components; Operation of main, auxiliary and pumping systems.
- Module Seven: Engine Room Watchkeeping
Relieving and handing over of the watch; Checklists; Record keeping; Monitoring of equipment; Evaluating log figures; Dealing with malfunctions; Decision making; Effective communication; Major emergencies; Machinery in standby mode; Dangers from HP leaks; Changing over of duplex filters.
- Module Eight: Engine Room Resource Management
Stores and spares management: receiving deliveries, labeling and stowage, stock control, consumables; Human relationships onboard: Synergy in workplace, Effective teamwork, Conflict management, Leadership, Work standard improvement.

Outcomes based assessments and continual evaluation after each section of the program.
