New Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) Course
The South African Maritime Training Academy (SAMTRA) has completed the development of a new training course for Electro-Technical Officers (ETO).
This initiative responds to demand from industry stakeholders and aligns with SAMTRA’s goal to broaden its maritime training programs.
Meeting SAMSA Standards:
SAMTRA has developed a detailed Training Record Book to ensure the ETO course meets the South African Maritime Safety Authority’s (SAMSA) regulatory standards.
Additionally, SAMTRA partnered with the Artisans Training Institute (ATI) in Kimberly to deliver hands-on workshop components, which ensures students will be able to meet both practical and theoretical training requirements.
Comprehensive Training Materials:
All ETO training materials are compiled into a Master Manual, which outlines the course curriculum and aligns with the International Maritime Organisation’s Model Course 7.08 – Electro Technical Officer at the Operational Level. These materials were presented to SAMSA for review, and the course received accreditation in early September 2024.
Pilot Launch:
SAMTRA began training the first cohort of candidates at the end of September 2024. The candidates were selected based on entry criteria defined by SAMSA’s Standard of Training & Assessment document (STA-02-101c).
Over the past eleven weeks of intensive training, students have shown great progress producing excellent assessment results.
Commitment to Industry Demand:
SAMTRA plans to continue training ETO cadets to meet the growing demand for qualified Electro-Technical Officers in the maritime industry.
This program represents SAMTRA’s dedication to developing skilled professionals for the sector as well as meeting industry demands.
